This is a book version of Ted Shortliffe's PhD dissertation, completed at Stanford University in October 1975. The volume was highly cited in the AI community and was influential in the development of expert systems, especially those using rule-based approaches. The certainty factor model, presented in Chapter 4, was also widely adopted and analyzed in detail by members of the Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence community.
