Medical Entities Dictionary (MED)
- Semantic network of concepts
- Multiple hierarchies
- Frame-based concept representation
- 42,000 concepts
These are the essential characteristics of the representational scheme for the MED. Each term is a "concept" frame. The slots in the frames may contain literal information, such as synonyms and codes used in ancillary systems, and may contain links to other frames. These links are used to represent hierarchical information as well as other nonhierarchical (semantic) relationships. Unlike most controlled vocabularies, the MED allows terms to exist in multiple hierarchies. At present, the number of terms is approaching 43,000 and continues to grow.
