IP Telephony Call Characteristics

Telephone calls can be intra or inter campus and department. Calls can also be between VoIP and PSTN phones (see Figure-3).

Figure: Experimental IP Telephony Architecture.

  1. PC to PSTN Calls

These calls are simulated as originating in an IP network destined for a PSTN network and vice-versa. Because we do not simulate the PSTN, we simply use the ITG as the endpoint. In our simulations, a PC caller is randomly selected from a campus and is connected to a PSTN phone through a gateway.

  2. PC to PC Calls

PC to PC calls are divided into three categories:

The user creates a simulation configuration file (Appendix V- config_sim) specifing the total number of IP Telephony calls, percentage distribution of calls - PC to PSTN and PC to PC (Inter and Intra Campus).
