Short Version

Currently, I am a fifth year Ph.D. candidate in the Biomedical Informatics program at Columbia University, New York.  My graduate research advisor is Dr. Itsik Pe'er.  My research interests include bioinformatics and computational biology, with a focus in computational cancer genetics and human genetics.

My graduate work has focused on examining genetic allelic imbalance in the context of somatic amplification in tumor data.  More specifically, I am developing computational methods to explore links between inherited germline genetic variation and somatic copy number aberrations.  For example, one hypothesis is that these germline variants confer risk of cancer development when present in a region of copy number gain in the tumor mass.

Education:

Ph.D. Candidate, Biomedical Informatics (Track: Bioinformatics) (2006 - Present)

Columbia University, New York, NY, Research Advisor: Itsik Pe'er

The gracious folks of DBMI offered me a spot, and I joined Columbia in Fall of 2006.  I’ve loved the opportunities I received here – namely, the education and the research projects (see above) I was able to pursue.  New York City has really grown on me.  Not many other cities have the dynamic energy and diversity that you see in the Big Apple.

MS, Computer Science (Tracks: Bioinformatics, Data Networking) (2002 - 2005)

University of California, San Diego, Thesis Advisor: Pavel Pevzner

In March of 2005, I graduated from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with an MS in Computer Science.  My thesis was completed in the bioinformatics area under the guidance of Pavel Pevzner.  The thesis involved analyzing genomes to discover evidence of Whole Genome Duplication events.

BS, Computer Science (1998 - 2002)

Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA

I attended Stanford University from 1998 to 2002 as an undergraduate and studied Computer Science.  I especially loved my time there, having been awed by the awesome quality of education, research, activities, and campus aesthetics (e.g. palm trees on campus).  In addition, I formed some of my closest friendships during this time and hope to stay in touch with my friends for years to come.

Work Experience:

Roughly between UCSD and Columbia, I worked as a Software Engineer at Akonix Systems in downtown San Diego (bet. 2004 - 2006) and was in technical charge of the Akonix L7 Enforcer product.

Personal Information:

I am also vegetarian, save for eating eggs from time to time.  Cakes and cookies are too good to give up just yet...

Movie Quote:

"But if you make yourself more than just a man... If you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can't stop you... then you become something else entirely..."

"Which is?"

"Legend, Mr. Wayne."

- exchange between Henri Ducard and Bruce Wayne, Batman Begins, 2005

I love that movie.
