Hello, I am Chintan O. Patel (COP), second year PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, New York. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Computer Science from Gujarat University (2002) and University of Missouri-Kansas City (2004) respectively. Currently I am exploring link discovery and multi-relational data mining approaches on biomedical knowledgebases (UMLS) with my advisor, Dr James J. Cimino. I am interested in anything related to Ontologies*(Philosophical & Computational). Nowadays I am fascinated by stuff in anthropology, statistics, HCI and evaluation. I interned at the Indian Space Research Organization (Implementing NL Interface and Rete rule-based system) and IBM T. J. Watson Research center (Developing algorithms for reasoning over large scale knowledgebases). During my studies at U of Missouri, I worked with folks from Mid America Heart Institute (HL7 based workflow engine) and Childrens Mercy Hospital (Ontology-based Data Integration and Analysis)

Some stuff I like to do... <Slashdotting>
I never read the actual articles (RTFA ;) but I like to read the views of 'slashdotters'. FUDs on M$ are always interesting.. It is one of my goal to get slashdotted.. and get Frank (our SysAdmin) running down frantically... while I ll be somewhere upstate sitting on the bank of Hudson with some Internet connection replying the comments... (btw I go by copdk4.. 712016.. yea yea... 6 digits.. I suck) I wonder why doesnt slashdot get a slashdot effect.. Is it possible to do that..Any ideas ? Seems a dude from U Washington wrote a PhD thesis on slashdot effect ! Ideal slashdotter stereotypes[answers.com]:

<Aeromodeling> I was obssesed with this hobby in my 9-10th grade then somehow I lost it.. Thankfully due to WRAM show.. now I am again on it.. Currently working on 18inch wing-span rubbered powered Praire Bird .. I ll put up some pictures soon.. Next on the list is a CO2 powered free flight 40inch wing-span WWW-II style model plane.. I find the construction and engineering phase more interesting than the actual flying of model airplane.. Some of the model planes have almost equivalent number of parts as compared to the 'real' plane. </Aeromodeling> <Reading> I am not that fond of reading anything on *paper* but couple of factors have made me addicted to reading books. - On NYC subways.. you cant just keep staring at people/advertisements.. so what most people do is to 'read' something or atleast pretend that way :) - My Nokia 929o works cool with PDFs and all sorts of eBooks.. and it has this inbuilt modem.. through which I use Columbia dailup to connect to Internet to download anysort of reading material I have finished couple of P.G. Wodehouse (free from Gutenberg project) and nowadays I am into all Dan Brown 'symbology, mystery, thriller' stuff. </Reading> Research Keywords: Ontologies, Terminologies, Knowledge Representation, Reasoning, Machine Learning Current Focus: Using Link Discovery, Multi-relational data mining and Machine Learning techniques for extracting (not explicitly asserted) conceptual links in large multi-terminology knowledgebases (UMLS) (with Dr James J. Cimino) Useful Links :
